HIPAA Security Analysis

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 was enacted as part of a Congressional healthcare reform. "Administrative Simplification" is an aspect of the law that requires the United States Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to develop standards and requirements for maintenance and transmission of health information that identifies individual patients. These standards are designed to improve efficiency and protect the security and confidentiality of electronic health information.

Asterisk Phone Systems

Asterisk is an open source PBX (private branch exchange) that provides all the functionality of high-end business telephone systems, and much more. It is the world's most flexible and extensible telephone system, providing many features that are not yet available in even the most advanced proprietary systems. It is also the world's cheapest telephone system. The software is free and runs on inexpensive Linux servers.

Asterisk was created by Mark Spencer of Digium (formerly Linux Support Services), and is now sponsored by Digium. Digium manufactures analog and digital telephone network interface cards that happen to work particularly well with Asterisk. This gives the company a long-term profit motive to support Asterisk, which is probably one of the main reasons the Asterisk project has succeeded where other open source telephony initiatives have failed to generate enough momentum to reach completion. Asterisk is currently in its 1.0 release, and sports a very impressive range of features for an early-stage product. Among the features baked into the system are:

  • Full support for analog, digital (T1, E1, PRI) and VoIP telephone interfaces (SIP, IAX and H.323 via external library)

  • Support for VoIP and analog telephone handsets

  • Ability to run in pure softswitch mode on generic Linux servers, Mac OS X and Windows (via CoLinux)

  • Ability to handle hundreds of concurrent calls on a single server

  • Extensive array of built-in call management features (e.g. call transfer, three-way calling, all of the usual bells and whistles found on business phone systems)

  • Voice mail with forwarding to internet email accounts

  • Meet Me dial-in conferencing

  • Fully configurable extension numbering (dial plan)

  • Automated call distribution (for customer contact centers)

  • Music on hold from a local recording or live MP3 or G.711 audio stream

  • Unlimited extensibility through AGI (Asterisk Gateway Interface), which allows developers to build custom CGI programs that control the telephone system (that is, interactive voice response systems)

    Digital Home Inventory

    Digital Home Inventory is the process of photographing and recording key information about the contents of your home for insurance purposes. Today's technology of digital photography and digital scanning facilitates the process and offers durable and reliable archiving methods.

    The information gathered during an inventory includes digital photos and details about the items in your home, such as description, purchase price, purchase date and manufacturer. These details can be provided via paperwork (receipts, owners manuals, etc.) or transcribed from customer worksheets.

    Our Digital Home Inventory is a 3-step process:

    Step 1: Preparation - We provide you with an instructional packet to complete prior to the Photo Session. The information in the packet will walk you through deciding what rooms/items you want inventoried, tagging special valuable items, and optionally gathering receipts, owner's manuals or appraisal records.

    Step 2: In-home Photo Session - We come to your home, review the packet and take digital photos of all rooms/items that you request. Session times range from 1 – 4 hours depending on the size of your home.

    Step 3: Processing & Delivery - We transfer the photos to our computer system and process them. We scan all the paperwork you provide and complete a custom inventory report based on the prep packet and photos.

    Within 10 business days, we deliver a completed Home Inventory Binder to you containing the electronic (CD) and paper versions of all the photos and records for you to store in a safe place
